Tracy's Story | A Coonley Colorful Glass Tile Backsplash

At Susan Jablon Mosaics, we pride ourselves on giving people the ability to create and design the tile of their dreams. This fantastic backsplash, and the story behind it, was sent to us by Tracy, one of our amazing customers in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Coonley Playhouse Window | Frank Lloyd Wright
Coonley Playhouse Window | Frank Lloyd Wright

This customer's vision was inspired by the windows of Frank Lloyd Wright's Coonley Family Playhouse. In 1911, Wright was hired by Avery Coonley to design a building to be used as a kindergarten for Coonley’s children. The building became known as the “Playhouse” because it included a stage. The most distinctive feature of the building is its windows. Wright said that the stained glass windows were inspired by parades, and a mix of vibrant and bright circles, squares, and rectangles mimics the balloons, flags, and confetti that you would see at a parade.

This customer took this exceptional idea and utilized our tools and designers to help bring this unique and artistic backsplash to life. This beautiful kitchen backsplash highlights how a customer can take their inspiration and use our custom mosaic designer to help them realize it.

This backsplash was designed using our Hybrid layout, giving the design a great mix of large and small squares and rectangles laid out in both horizontal and vertical positions. To add that extra special touch, the area of the backsplash directly behind the stovetop incorporates our hand-fused red glass tile circles. The fused circles really complete this masterpiece and give it a whole new element. As the backsplash extends out hand-fused white 2-inch squares take the place of the fused red circles.

Here is Tracy's story:

Here are some more pictures of our kitchen with the mosaic installed.  The tiles are beautiful and installed very well!

The kitchen was part of a large addition/remodel in which we removed a load bearing wall.  The cabinets are natural cherry (which is oxidized beautifully) with “figured” panels, the countertops are black granite (called black galaxy) and the floor is natural maple (no stain, satin sealer).  Appliances (except microwave) are Thermador.  The only “wall” in the kitchen is the one with the mosaic backsplash on it.

The mosaic design was done over time (and with several samples) on the website’s design tool and was inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright design of the Coonley Playhouse Windows.

We are super happy with how it came out and with the tile!!!!!  Would recommend you folks to anyone!
